Middle School Conferences

I know that Ms. Steinkamp and Mrs. Hensel will be handling your individual conferences this spring. I will be available on Thursday from 10:00 AM until 2:00 PM if you would like to ask me any questions or just stop in to say hello. You will find that each student should have a folder with some of their work from this trimester. I basically had them empty their expanda-file of science stuff and put it in there. Feel free to contact me outside of the conference time if you have any questions.

6th Grade Science

This trimester we mainly worked on the structure and function of cells. We had a pretty good background in cell organelles and their function. We have tried to enhance our understanding of the diversity of cells and how cell structure is related to it's particular function. You may see a project dealing with Sickle Cell Anemia in your child's folder. That was our assessment for the cell unit. At the end of the trimester we have been looking at the organization of multicellular organisms. We will continue working on that for the next couple of weeks.

7th Grade Science

The seventh grade has had a major emphasis on DNA structure and it's relationship to it's function. Understanding DNA reaches into protein synthesis, genetics and mutations. We plan on finishing up with the students having a general understanding of the mechanisms of cancer as well as understanding how genetic engineering is used today.

8th Grade Science

In eighth grade science we have began talking about waves, their properties, and their uses. As a class we created a poster in the science room showing the electromagnetic spectrum and the many uses of those types of waves. The kids did a nice job on the project. Check it out on the west wall of my classroom if you get a chance. I am looking forward to finishing up the school year with the 8th graders discussing the human body systems.
